A CATALOGUE OF GREEK COINS IN THE GULBENKIAN MUSEUM PART II GREECE TO EAST

Published 1992  2 Parts Text And Plates 200 Pages With Portfolio Of (43)-99 Superb (Unbound) Plates. Cloth Cover

The rest of the Greek coinage is now covered in the second volume which contains the remaining 696 coins. It is edited by G K Jenkins and M C Hipolito. It consists of two parts the text volume and a separate folder which contains 56 unbound plates. The photography and the printing are excellent.
The text consists of a short introduction the catalogue indices a bibliography and a note by J M Peixoto Cabral on the specific gravity of 52 electrum staters of Cyzicus. The major difference from other catalogues is the division of coins into those of the archaic-classical and the Hellenistic period with Alexander's death as the beginning of the later period. The editors admit to some anomalies in this division such as the fact that the coinage of Philip II is shelved under the Hellenistic heading because of its close links with that of Alexander III.
